When rectangular DT and HDP20 connectors aren't enough - when you need a fully circular, bayonet-locking, truly military-grade connection - the Deutsch DRC series is the answer. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is the Deutsch DRC Series?

The DRC (Deutsch Rectangular Connector - Circular variant) series is a circular, environmentally sealed connector designed to MIL-DTL-26482 military specifications. Originally developed for military ground vehicles and aerospace applications, the DRC is now widely used in heavy trucks, agricultural equipment, mining machinery, and any application requiring absolute reliability under extreme conditions.

DRC Key Specifications

  • Shell style: Circular with bayonet coupling - locks with a 1/4-turn twist, cannot vibrate loose
  • IP rating: IP67 standard, IP69K available
  • Temperature range: -65F to +302F
  • Vibration resistance: MIL-STD-202 Method 201 - designed for extreme vibration environments
  • Shell sizes: 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23 (determines number of contacts)
  • Contact sizes: Size 8 (70A), Size 12 (40A), Size 16 (13A), Size 20 (7.5A) - mix and match in one housing
  • Contacts per shell: 3 to 61 depending on shell size and contact mix

DRC Shell Size Guide

Shell size determines the outer diameter and maximum number of contacts:

  • Shell 11: Smallest - up to 4 size 20 contacts
  • Shell 13: Up to 6 size 16 or 3 size 12 contacts
  • Shell 15: Up to 10 size 16 or 4 size 12 contacts
  • Shell 17: Up to 17 size 16 or 6 size 12 contacts
  • Shell 19: Up to 24 size 16 or 8 size 12 contacts
  • Shell 21: Up to 32 size 16 contacts
  • Shell 23: Up to 61 size 20 contacts - largest DRC configuration

Common DRC Applications

Military & Government Vehicles

Standard on HMMWV (Humvee), M-ATV, and other military ground vehicles for chassis-to-body connections, weapon system interfaces, and electronic warfare equipment connectors.

Heavy Construction & Mining Equipment

CAT, Komatsu, and Deere use DRC connectors for machine control systems, hydraulic valve banks, and electronic control module connections that must survive 24/7 operation in extreme environments.

Agricultural Equipment

Large-frame tractors and combines use DRC connectors for implement interfaces - the bayonet lock means connections stay secure even during extreme vibration from field operation.

Emergency Vehicles

Fire trucks, ambulances, and police vehicles use DRC connectors for body-to-chassis connections where vibration, moisture, and repeated connect/disconnect cycles demand military-grade reliability.

Aerospace Ground Support

Airport ground support equipment, hangar systems, and aircraft test equipment use DRC connectors for their MIL-spec reliability and ability to handle mixed signal/power circuits in one connector.

DRC Assembly Guide

Tools Required

  • Deutsch/TE Connectivity crimp tool for appropriate contact size (W-HT-1921 for size 8/12, W-HT-450-F for size 16/20)
  • Contact extraction tool (W-HT-TR4 or equivalent)
  • Torque wrench for backshell tightening (if using EMI/strain relief backshell)

Assembly Steps

  1. Plan your layout: Map which contacts carry power vs signal - put high-current contacts on the outside positions to minimize heat transfer to signal contacts
  2. Strip and crimp: Strip wire to contact manufacturer spec, crimp with ratcheting tool - verify with go/no-go gauge if available
  3. Insert contacts: Push contacts into housing until you feel/hear a click - use the extraction tool (not pliers) to reseat any that don't click
  4. Install wire seal: Thread wires through the rear seal before inserting contacts
  5. Install strain relief/backshell: Torque to spec - this protects the contacts from wire pull-out forces
  6. Mate and lock: Align keys, push together, rotate 1/4 turn to lock - the bayonet should positively engage

DRC Part Number Decoding

Example: DRC26-24S-B

  • DRC: Series
  • 26: Shell size
  • 24: Number of contacts
  • S: Socket (female) - P = Pin (male)
  • B: Rear seal configuration
