If you're running Mobil 1 full synthetic oil, pairing it with a Mobil 1 oil filter makes sense - they're engineered to work together. But Mobil 1 makes several filter models with different specs. Here's how to choose the right one.

Why Oil Filter Quality Matters

Your oil filter works every second your engine runs. A low-quality filter with weak bypass valves, poor media, or inadequate construction can allow unfiltered oil to reach your engine bearings - causing accelerated wear. With synthetic oil designed for 10,000-20,000 mile intervals, your filter needs to last just as long.

Mobil 1 Oil Filter Lineup

Mobil 1 Extended Performance (M1-110 Series) - Best Overall

The flagship Mobil 1 filter, designed to last up to 20,000 miles - matching the Extended Performance oil change interval. Key specs:

  • Filtration efficiency: Removes 99.6% of particles down to 25-30 microns
  • Anti-drainback valve: Silicone construction - lasts longer than rubber in extreme temps
  • Bypass valve: Opens at precise pressure - prevents starvation on cold starts
  • Media: Synthetic fiber blend with higher dirt-holding capacity than standard filters
  • Construction: Steel baseplate, not aluminum - less prone to thread stripping

Popular part numbers: M1-110, M1-111, M1-113, M1-204, M1-206, M1-207, M1-208, M1-209, M1-301, M1-302, M1-304

Mobil 1 Advanced (M1-102 Series)

Designed for standard synthetic oil change intervals (7,500-10,000 miles). Same high-quality construction as the Extended Performance series but optimized for shorter intervals. Good choice if you change oil more frequently than 10,000 miles.

How to Find Your Mobil 1 Filter Part Number

The easiest way is to use a vehicle fitment lookup. Mobil 1 filter part numbers are cross-compatible with most major brands:

  • M1-110 = Fram PH3600, Purolator PL14610, AC Delco PF46E
  • M1-113 = Fram PH3614, WIX 57060
  • M1-204 = Fram PH3506, Purolator L14459

Mobil 1 Filter vs Competitors

vs Purolator PureOne

Purolator PureOne is an excellent filter with 99.9% efficiency - slightly better than Mobil 1's 99.6%. However, Mobil 1 Extended Performance wins on change interval (20,000 miles vs Purolator's 15,000). Both are premium choices.

vs Bosch Premium FILTECH

Bosch uses a unique glass-fiber composite media for excellent filtration. Similar performance tier to Mobil 1. Good alternative if Mobil 1 is unavailable for your application.

vs Fram Ultra Synthetic

Fram's premium tier is competitive with Mobil 1 on filtration specs. However, Mobil 1's silicone anti-drainback valve outperforms Fram's rubber valve in extreme temperature applications.

vs Budget Filters (Fram Orange, Pennzoil)

Budget filters work fine for 3,000-5,000 mile intervals with conventional oil. For extended intervals with synthetic oil, they're not adequate - the media can't hold enough contaminants and bypass valves may open prematurely.

How Often Should You Change Your Oil Filter?

  • Conventional oil: Every oil change (3,000-5,000 miles)
  • Synthetic blend: Every oil change (5,000-7,500 miles)
  • Full synthetic + standard filter: Every oil change (7,500-10,000 miles)
  • Full synthetic + Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter: Up to 20,000 miles

Never extend your filter interval beyond what the filter is rated for, even if your oil could last longer.

Installation Tips

  • Apply a thin film of fresh oil to the filter gasket before installation
  • Hand-tighten only - typically 3/4 turn past gasket contact
  • Never use a filter wrench to install - only to remove
  • Check for the old gasket stuck to the engine - double-gasketing causes oil leaks
  • Run the engine and check for leaks before driving
