Grease is one of the most overlooked maintenance items in automotive care - but using the wrong type or skipping it entirely leads to premature bearing failure, squeaky suspension, and expensive repairs. Here's Valvoline's complete grease lineup explained.
Why Grease Matters
Grease provides three things: lubrication (reduces friction), protection (prevents metal-to-metal contact), and sealing (keeps water and contaminants out). Unlike oil, grease stays where you put it - critical for wheel bearings, ball joints, U-joints, and chassis fittings that can't use a liquid lubricant.
Valvoline Grease Products
Valvoline Multi-Vehicle Multi-Purpose Grease
The workhorse of the lineup. NLGI #2 lithium complex grease suitable for most automotive applications including wheel bearings, chassis fittings, ball joints, and tie rod ends. Temperature range: -20F to +325F. Water resistant. The right choice for general maintenance when you want one product that does it all.
Valvoline Moly-Fortified Gray Grease
Added molybdenum disulfide (moly) for extreme pressure applications. The moly creates a solid film lubricant layer that protects under shock loading - ideal for U-joints, slip yokes, and fifth wheel kingpins. The gray color comes from the moly content.
Valvoline Full Synthetic Grease
Synthetic base oil + lithium complex thickener for extended service intervals and wider temperature range (-40F to +400F). The choice for high-performance applications, vehicles with extended greasing intervals, or extreme temperature environments.
Valvoline Bearing & Chassis Grease
Specifically formulated for high-speed wheel bearings. Higher dropping point (temperature at which grease liquefies) than standard multi-purpose grease - important for disc brake applications where hub temperatures run higher.
Grease Compatibility Warning
Not all greases are compatible. Mixing lithium and calcium soap greases, or mixing different thickener types, can cause the grease to liquefy and fail. When switching grease types, purge the old grease completely before repacking.
NLGI Grade Explained
- NLGI #0/#1: Semi-fluid, for centralized lubrication systems
- NLGI #2: Standard consistency - most common for wheel bearings and chassis
- NLGI #3: Stiffer - for high-temperature or high-speed applications
